Playing With the Grandkids

The grandsons’ summer baseball season has ended, and my granddaughter’s theater camp is closing with 9 performances of the Little Mermaid Junior over two weekends. She has five costume changes in an hour program, so she is on stage most of the play. Of course, she’s outstanding, and is her nana’s favorite character.

With the culmination of their activities, I’m delighted to have had a couple of days with them. So, what do you do with two 13-year-olds and two 11-year-olds?

As growing kids are always hungry, I made plenty of food including homemade bread, chocolate chip pancakes and sausages, mashed potatoes, peas, and meatloaf, chicken noodle soup, sandwiches, fruit, and cookie bars.

We went for a long walk and watched a couple of movies. The weather was hot, humid, and stormy, so most of our time was indoors.

The four kids also hung out for a while, talking and playing on their own.

We spent a few hours painting pottery at a local shop.

Four of us selected smaller pieces–a s’mores jar with a lid, a shark, a tea light holder my grandson painted as a basketball net to hold small basketballs, and mine, a flower bowl.

One of my grandsons chose a large dog. We all ended up painting parts of that one because it takes time to paint at least three coats on the pottery. I think all of our pieces turned out well and will look even better after they are glazed and fired.

For a physical activity, we, including me, played four-square. The game is simple and fast-paced. It’s a common game, but if you don’t know or remember, four connecting squares are drawn on the driveway with chalk. The squares are either labeled A-D or 1-4.

A rubber playground ball is served across from the 1st to 3rd square and must bounce before hitting it underhanded to another square. This continues until the ball is out of bounds.

We also played a card game called 5 Second Rule. Each player draws a card with a question that must be answered with three responses. For example, a card may state, β€œName three musicals.” The player has five seconds to respond. We simply went through the cards taking turns without keeping score.

What I loved most about the game was all the discussions that were prompted by the questions. My grandkids are intelligent and clever. Conversations with them have substance and offer me insight as to their thoughts and way of life.

I’m grateful to be blessed with beautiful, loving children and grandchildren, especially ones who live close enough for me to see often. I can’t imagine my life without them.

What a heartwarming post! It beautifully captures the joy of spending meaningful time with grandchildren and creating memories they’ll treasure for years to come.

I smiled reading about the delicious homemade meals, the pottery painting, the walks, movie time, and even the lively game of four-square. These aren’t just activitiesβ€”they’re moments of love, laughter, and togetherness that strengthen family bonds. Your granddaughter’s dedication to The Little Mermaid Junior sounds wonderful, and it’s easy to see how proud you are of her.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Vijay. I know you share that love of grandchildren. Aren’t they special gifts in our lives? We would never have guessed when we were young how wonderful it is to be a grandparent.

That’s funny. I was just thinking about this. We have ours on Fridays and this week Thursday and Friday and I’m never sure on creativity. Neither are they.

I’m not one for watching blockbuster films, but I had a good time watching minions with our granddaughter in Germany.

And she will be here in a couple weeks. Your activities pretty much sound like mine.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

I don’t think it matters what we do as long as we do it with the kids. Enjoy your wee ones, Mark.

I can imagine the blissful feelings from that blissful day, nearly as if I were there in person.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Hubert. I certainly enjoyed every moment, and the kids have continued to text me with thank yous.

  18. restlessjo

It sounds perfect, Mary. We’ve done the pottery painting too but a small blue penguin was much more manageable. It’s just lovely that they want to spend time with you xx

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Right? I’m so happy they go out of their way to figure out dates for us to see each other. May it always be so. Thank you so much, Jo.

  19. Under the mask..

Sounds like a lovely time, Mary. I generally don’t like photos of me, but those taken especially with a grandchild (or more) reflect an easy happiness, like childhood photos of me plunked down beside a fawn, or admiring an elk, or in a favorite summer outfit holding a caught fish. Maybe I just don’t feel like I have to wear a wifely/momly face with grands. And maybe grands are simply our 2nd childhood summer. I do wish I was younger, though, for the 2nd and 3rd wave of them!

    1. Mary K. Doyle

You make a great point about us reliving our childhoods through out children and grandchildren. We get to play again. Thank you for taking the time to post your insightful comment. Blessings to you.

      1. Under the mask..

Thank you — blessings to you as well!

5-second rule sounds like fun. I love quiz

    1. Mary K. Doyle

The game is fun, and there are several versions of it. The best part is everyone can play.

  22. johnlmalone

I’m blessed with great grandkids too; they came over recently and we spent most of the week together, going to galleries, having meals and coffee time together: they’re adults now; I helped bring them up —

  25. CJ Antichow

    Sounds like so much fun!

    1. Mary K. Doyle

You are doing the same with your children, CJ. The best part of grandparenting is that we can give it our all and then crash for a couple of days to recover. You don’t have that luxury just yet.

      1. CJ Antichow

Lol yes, resting in between the fun sounds pretty good 😌

  26. Garden Bliss

Such a wonderful time spent together, Mary. I can just imagine the warm chats, good food and special memories created with that very special person, grandma. Enjoy, dear Mary. πŸ™

    1. Mary K. Doyle

LOL. Eating at Nana’s seems to be their favorite. One grandson said my house always smells like food. Thank you, Edward.

      1. Edward Ortiz

Awesome! That’s so wonderful, and it’s something they’ll remember when they get older. One day they’ll be telling their own kids about all the delicious food and snacks Nana always had for them.

The ceramics are fabulous! I haven’t heard of the game 5 Second Rule – I’ll look it up… although I’m not bad at trivia, I think the timer would give me stage fright! Rest up! Linda xx

    1. Mary K. Doyle

5 seconds is enough time, if you know the answer, but it doesn’t give time to think. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Linda. All the best to you.
