Poem/Haiku and Excerpt–Spirituality for Health

Prayer is Powerful

Why do you worry?
If you believe in prayer,
you know its power.

*

More of my prayers have been answered than I can count, some of which were absolutely incredible. I’ve written on the power of prayer (see also, Winning Prayers) in past posts.

Regardless of how our prayers are answered, the act of praying is spiritually, emotionally, and physically healthy for us. Communication with God is beneficial for our whole being.

Following is an excerpt on this topic from Young in the Spirit. Please read on, and keep on praying.

*

“Spirituality is good for our health. There is a saying that our thoughts become our words, our words become our actions, and our actions become our reality. Negative, worrisome, or angry thoughts adversely affect the body. They pollute the body, mind, and spirit and manifest in pain and disability. Friends, family, and peers are affected by our foul actions and words, as well.

In contrast, prayerful and peaceful thoughts alter the whole person and everyone around us in a positive way. Research finds that spirituality is associated with improved immune systems and fewer episodes of chronic inflammation. It also is known to lower rates of depression, a common condition in seniors. At least 25 percent of older adults suffer from depression, and that number increases significantly for those with physical illnesses.

Perhaps spirituality helps with these conditions because of the calming effect of prayer. Prayerful meditation can lower blood pressure and promote peacefulness in both mind and body. In addition, religion can be a strong deterrent to suicide (ASR.14) Older people with depression who are spiritual are less likely to intentionally harm themselves. A study in the September 2008 Journal of Affective Disorders reported that suicide rates are lower among people who regularly attend religious services.

Spirituality relieves stress in difficult times. Throughout the struggles and heartaches of life, religion is the primary method by which a sizeable portion of older Americans cope. As we age, we tend to turn toward our faith in the midst of turmoil.

Spirituality gives hope. When life gets tough, faithful people place their worries in God’s hands. We pray, Thy will be done, and trust that God knows best and will take care of everything. All will be well. Our prayers remove at least a portion of the stress, and therefore, some of the damage stress does to the body. In a sense, we gain control by giving it up to our loving God. We are better able to continue our life journey one step at a time rather than be crippled by fear. “

A lovely excerpt and I very much agree. I think it really helps to have faith, to have a way of feeling calmer even during stressful times.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you for your feedback on this important topic, Pooja. Where would we be in these stressful times without our faith? Have the best day, my friend.

      1. Pooja G

So true, it gets us through hard times. Have a great day too.

Couldn’t agree more, Mary. Your haiku says it all 🙂 ❤

  6. Kym Gordon Moore

Love your haiku and oh how this resonates Mary:
“Regardless of how our prayers are answered, the act of praying is spiritually, emotionally, and physically healthy for us. Communication with God is beneficial for our whole being.”

This is potent and encouraging! Thanks so much for sharing your empowering message. Hugs my friend. 🤗💖🙌🏼

  7. Mary K. Doyle

Hello Kym, I thought it was an important time for readers to relax, pray, and believe. Love to you, my friend.

  8. Dawna

I love this Mary. I was just finishing up a Lysa Terkeurst book this morning and she was reminding her listeners too of how important prayer is. Her point was directed to forgiving others, but the point still remains, prayer and leaving things in God’s hands is so much better.

I was talking with my therapist this week too and she broached the subject of a higher power. She suggested too that when I’m having a panic attack or in the midst of being triggered by something to close my eyes and give my worries to God.

Your post today I believe is God’s way of reminding me of my promises to him. He has answered so many of my prayers and during many talks with God I came to a realization that he wants me to do his work and help others see a path to being spiritual more than religious. While I do agree that have a faith and church are important for so many reasons, people have gotten so far from God that they need to see his power and glory from a spiritual aspect and then maybe they can find their way to having a faith within a religion. Just my thought.

I feel God wants to use me and I feel so drawn to talk to others, I just got stuck some how in where to begin. Your post spoke to me in so many ways. Perhaps God is using your post to remind me of my promise to him that I would do my best to help others see he is a God of love and not one to be feared.

Anyway, I love the photo. You are such an artist and an inspiration.

    Hugs my friend.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Oh, gosh, Dawna, your post is so heartfelt and beautiful. You can copy and work it into a post. Your readers will appreciate your concerns and desires. It’s funny how we who believe in prayer and yet keep praying the same prayers. We are children who repeatedly keep saying, “Please, can I have?” Our prayers are powerful. We can give them to God and let go. Once for each prayer really is enough. God hears us. Thank you for sharing your beautiful message with me and my readers, Dawna. You are special.

      1. Dawna

Thank you Mary for your kind words. I think you’re a special person too. I love the way you teach, or should I say, I love what I learn from your posts. You’re a strong woman.
It’s funny you mention the, “please can I have?” type of prayers. I’ve come to learn the hard way, sometimes God answers our can I have prayer with redirecting our thinking, that is, if we are truly listening to his word. Sometimes the ‘can I haves’ aren’t in our best interest and we get so caught up in them that we lose sight of his hand guiding us. I truly believe God brings people together for a reason and I feel so strongly that he’s guided me to your blog, not only to learn and gain more compassion, but to help open my eyes to the beauty of someone else’s faith. Being raised in a cult, I was forbidden to learn the truth about other people’s faith. I was taught only the negatives. I used to pray to God to help me see the bad in other religions and I couldn’t, I mean aside from the human imperfections. Instead, God only showed me how good people were and are. Not all, but most that I’ve been blessed to meet and come across. I’m thankful for you. Hugs my friend

        1. Mary K. Doyle

Your journey out of that cult is impressive, Dawna. You amaze me. May you find happiness in every day.

  18. gc1963

I read the last part of your post this morning and it filled me up with optimism and hope.

Throughout my life I have been involuntarily given in to prayers and regular visits to temples when life seemed out of control.

It is not that the answer to prayers is immediate but it’s always when we are ripe for it

Therefore, patience is as much needed as prayers. God listens and died the needful when it is required to be done.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Yes, I understand and agree with you. “When we are ripe for it.”

  19. gc1963
