Poem–Sweet Autumn Clematis

Sweet Autumn Clematis

Sweet autumn clematis–a solid wall of green and white,
full and lush from two small sprouts.
A little bit of love from the gardener, sun, and rain
goes a long way with nature.

These vivid, white, four-petaled blossoms cause me to ponder.
What if they were bright, white stars
scattered throughout a green sky in the middle of the night,
and grass, trees, and shrubs were blue?

Oceans would reflect the sky and also be green, I think.
So, what colors would we be?
Perhaps we’d have skin tones like zinnias, daisies, and orchids
and admire each other’s shade.

(These are the thoughts that rambled through my head while having a throbbing headache.)

If those are the kind of thoughts brought on by a throbbing headache, I wish you have more headaches.
    No, no, no, I jest. I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist. 😀

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Hahahaha. Thank you for playing along with me, Lenny.

  5. Jeannette Elizabeth Geist-Marcelli

I pray your headache goes away soon, Mary. Beautiful wall of flowers! And a very lovely poem as always, describing the flowers as stars right to humanity as different gorgeous types 💐🌷🪻🪷of flowers. Nice to hear your voice on this as well. 😊

Such a gorgeous sight Mary. Having any thoughts ramble through your mind during a throbbing headache is a miracle in itself. Hope your headache is gone. Happy Wednesday. Allan

  8. gustavo_horta

  9. Mags Win

Gorgeous! Sorry about the headache, hoping it is gone. Hugs and blessings

    1. Mary K. Doyle

  18. Dorothy’s New Vintage Kitchen

This is one of my favorite perennial vines! I had a beautiful one at my last house, but haven’t gotten around to planting one here yet. Thanks for the reminder, when I go looking for mums later this week, I’ll see if they have any in stock.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Isn’t it fun to have something so lively at the end of the summer? I hope you find a plant, Dorothy. If not, I wonder if I could send you a cutting and it would grow for you.

      1. Dorothy’s New Vintage Kitchen

Thank you so much Mary! You are such a sweetheart! I did find one quite unexpectedly at the local garden center when I was looking for mums! It’s now in the garden, blooming away, ready to get used to its new home!

        1. Mary K. Doyle

Let me know how it grows next year, my friend.

          1. Dorothy’s New Vintage Kitchen

            Will do!

  19. vermavkv

What a wonderfully imaginative and vivid poem! 🌿✨
You’ve taken something as simple as a sweet autumn clematis and transformed it into a meditation on nature, color, and perception. The way you play with the idea of a green sky and blue plants invites the reader to see the world through a completely new lens — playful, curious, and full of wonder.

I love how your reflections on flowers as stars and the question of human colors open up a space for imagination and inclusivity, blending observation of nature with a philosophical musing on diversity. It’s both whimsical and thought-provoking, a gentle reminder of the beauty in seeing the familiar in extraordinary ways.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Vijay, your response is so beautifully written. I appreciate your kindness and thoughtful words, my friend.

  20. Nancy Homlitas

The clouds of clematis are beautifully described in your poem. I didn’t see any bees, so I looked up the reason. I learned that they’re picky pollinators when it comes to any variety of clematis. Hopefully, your headache is better now. 🙂

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Hi Nancy, bees and butterflies do check out the blossoms, as well as hummingbirds, but there aren’t too many that linger. Thanks for looking up why this is so! I appreciate you and hope your day is going well.

  21. Rosaliene Bacchus

What a beauty, Mary, to inspire one’s soul to greater heights, as expressed so beautifully in your poem! Are these flowers highly scented? Hope your headache has long passed 🙂

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Hi Rosaliene, I wish you could smell the fragrance. It’s light and lovely. I think you’d enjoy it. We could sit here with some iced tea and enjoy together.

      1. Rosaliene Bacchus

Mary, I suspected as much about their fragrance 🙂 Enjoying iced tea together be great, Mary! Who knows what the future holds?

  22. Michael Sammut

Beautiful poem, Mary and lovely photos.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Michael. The blossoms are lush this year. Happy Wednesday to you.

      1. Michael Sammut

You’re welcome and Happy Wednesday to you too, Mary.

  23. P. J. Gudka

Those are so beautiful and loved the poem. Hope your headache is gone now.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, dear Pooja. I’ve had about 4 months of headaches, but since my blood pressure is finally semi-controlled, I’m so much better! Doesn’t it feel good when we feel good? Love you much, Sweetie.

      1. P. J. Gudka

I’m really glad to hear that, my dad had some issues with his BP as well but he’s much better too. I’m not sure if you’ve tried facial icing for the headaches but I do that when I get migraines and it helps a lot. Thank you and take good care of yourself!

        1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you! I forget about the ice.

          1. P. J. Gudka

You’re welcome. Yeah, try the ice it may help.

      1. Victoria

Oh…thanks for the info, dear Mary. I take a Zyrtec every day but it doesn’t do it for me come September….appreciate the tip. Sending hugs! With a sneeze, just because! 😜💝😜

One of my favourite flowers! The pollinators are tanking up for the winter. Lovely poem.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Really, Michael? I didn’t know about the fall clematis until recently. It’s a joy, isn’t it? And such a light, lovely fragrance.

      1. Michael Watson PhD

I did not know about it till I have here, where it grows with wild abundance and abandon. Breathtakingly wild flower that it is.

It’s a very healthy looking plant, Mary. We used to have a variety of clematis in our UK garden but the climate here doesn’t suit them xx

    1. Mary K. Doyle

I think they prefer cooler and drier climates being that I have them growing in the spring and fall. Thank you for stopping by, Jo.
