Respect Life, All Life

When we think of respecting life, we typically consider the unborn, the wee ones whose lives are prohibited from existence beyond the womb. (An estimated 1.1 million clinical abortions occurred in the United States in 2025. Around 73 million induced abortions take place worldwide each year.)

However, all of God’s creation needs our attention. In addition to these precious souls. please consider:

  • The Poor— (One in 7 Americans live below the poverty line, and around 800 million people worldwide live in extreme poverty.)
  • The Hungry— 48 million Americans (about 1 in 7) and about 673 million people (1 in 11) worldwide are estimated to have insufficient food.
  • The Homeless— Statistics state that 745,652 people were homeless in 2025.
    • 479,332 people resided in emergency shelters, transitional housing, or safe havens.
    • 266,320 people lived in cars or the street.
    • Major disasters and extreme weather are the cause of relocation for an estimated 11 million residents in the US.
    • Worldwide, 1 in 70 people were forced to flee their home last year.
    • Estimates show that more than 300 million people worldwide lack permanent shelter and 2.8 billion lack safe housing.
  • The Abused—117.8 million people were forcibly displaced at the end of December 2025 according to the UNHCR Global Trends report. World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF estimate that nearly 1 billion children and 840 million women face physical, emotional, or sexual violence at some point.
  • The Imprisoned—The US has nearly two million people incarcerated. According to data from the Prison Policy Initiative, roughly 1.9 to 2 million people are locked up daily in the United States.
    • Inmates who are later proven innocent often spend 30 years or more in prison before being released.
    • Since 1973, the United States has officially cleared and released 203 people from death row, but researchers estimate that the real number of innocent people sentenced to death is closer to 4% of those incarcerated.
    • There are approximately 11.5 million to 11.7 million people in prison around the world, according to data tracked by the World Prison Population List.
    • According to Amnesty International, there were at least 25,508 people recorded as being under a sentence of death worldwide at the end of 2025.
  • The Chronically Ill—In the United States, roughly 3 in 4 adults (about 76% or 194 million people) live with at least one chronic illness, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • The Lonely—Around 1 in 6 people worldwide, or roughly over 1 billion individuals, experience loneliness at any given time, according to data from the World Health Organization Commission on Social Connection.
    • Surveys conducted with groups such as Meta-Gallup studies, estimate that up to 24% of adults (about 1.5 billion people) feel lonely on a regular basis.
    • Adolescents and young adults suffer the highest rates of loneliness.
    • Loneliness is more common in lower-income countries (nearly 1 in 4 people, or 24%) compared to higher-income nations (around 11%).
    • Health Impact: Chronic loneliness can result in serious illness and even death. According to WHO Commission on Social Connection, loneliness causes about 100 deaths every hour globally.
  • The Caregivers— There are approximately 63 million family caregivers in the United States, (Caregiving in the U.S. 2025 report by AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving (NAC).)
    • About 1 in 4 American adults (63 million people) serves as a family caregiver. The responsibilities impact caregivers’ finances, state of mind, stress level, and physical health.
    • Approximately 43% of the global population care for a family member or friend at some point.
  • The Suicidal— An estimated 14.3 million adults had serious thoughts of suicide, 4.6 million planned an attempt, and 2.2 million attempted suicide in the U.S. Suicide remains the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 10 to 34, while older adults (particularly ages 80+) experience some of the highest age-specific rates.
  • The Environment— According to AI statistics, human activity currently uses the resources of 1.6 Earths, threatening 1 million species with extinction and altering 75% of land and 66% of marine environments.
  • Drinking Water—About 1.1 billion people globally lack access to clean water, and 2.7 billion experience water scarcity for at least one month out of the year (Earth.Org).

From this long list of statistics, it’s easy to see that we all are affected by these concerns. There is an urgent and immediate call to respect life on every level. A little care and compassion for all creation can make a powerful impact.

Such an important message, Mary. Respecting life means so much more than words; it means compassion, empathy, and caring for those who are suffering in ways we may never see. Every life matters, and even the smallest act of kindness can make a difference. Thank you for sharing this reminder. ❤️

    1. Mary K. Doyle

      Thank you, dear Carol.

  4. Ol’ Big Jim

After delivery and the child breathes and becomes a person, most people in charge of us no longer care what happens to them. Strange, odd, and curious, ain’t it?

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Yes, Jim. There are too many terrified, sad, hungry, and unloved children and young adults in the world. And then, we wonder what went wrong with them.

  5. Indira

This is an outstanding post, and yes, one item neglected often is this

The Environment— According to AI statistics, human activity currently uses the resources of 1.6 Earths, threatening 1 million species with extinction and altering 75% of land and 66% of marine environments.

This is why I went vegan 17 years ago. I continued for other ethical reasons as well..

The way the United States takes care of it. People is embarrassing.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Exactly, Mark. We can all try a little harder. I can only imagine our planet will face in the not too distant future.

  10. vermavkv

A powerful reminder that respecting life must extend beyond words and beliefs to compassion, kindness, and meaningful action. Every human being deserves dignity, whether they are poor, hungry, lonely, ill, or struggling to find hope. We must also remember our responsibility to protect animals and the environment that sustain us all.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Well summarized, Vijay. Thank you for your kindness and important comment.

  11. kagould17

A perfect message for today Mary. All too often in our haste to get ahead, both personally and nationally, we leave many behind who do not have the same opportunities. Success is not measured by how many people we vanquish, but by how many people we lift up. The 1% don’t always agree on this and so we all get dragged along. Have a great day. Allan

    1. Mary K. Doyle

So well expressed, Allan. Everyone carries a load. Even a moment of kindness can make a difference.

What a wonderful post sharing such important information and reminding some that all lives are important and every deserves respect and compassion

    1. Mary K. Doyle

We feel overwhelmed but so do most everyone around us. Love to you, Joanne.

  19. Michelle (Boomer Eco Crusader)

Wonderful post, Mary. It’s heartbreaking that there are so many marginalized people in our society. Every human life matters and is worthy of respect and dignity. We’ve certainly made a mess of things.

I can be branded as a left-wing socialist, but I believe rich countries like the United States and Canada have a responsibility to look after their citizens. Yet, the chasm between the rich and everyone else grows wider with each passing day. I often look at the ultra rich and the things they waste money on (like space travel just because) and think of the good they could do with that money.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you for your insight, Michelle. I agree with you on all points. The rich are entitled to do what they wish with their money, but when I hear about auctions for memorabilia going in the thousands and more, I hope these people are also tithing. We need their support.

  20. Hazel

I’m praying each lonely hearts today that they feel the embrace of God. Peace and love to the world!

    1. Mary K. Doyle

You always are so compassionate, Hazel. Love to you.

      1. Hazel

Thank you, Mary. Love and hugs back

  21. Lenny Appadoo

    Excellent citations there, Mary.
The world is in much need of more empathy and kindness but first, awareness.
Awareness leads to empathy and kindness.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

That is an excellent point, Lenny. People with resources may not know the need. Thank you, my friend.

  22. Mags Win

    Great post Mary

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you kindly, Mags. Have the best day.

  23. Edward Ortiz

Amen, Mary! I like what Pope Leo said about being “pro-life.” He is, of course, spot on, and you included a great list. I think a lot of people focus on just one issue and forget that, as the Pope said, life is important at every stage.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

From birth to natural death. Thank you, my friend. I appreciate your feedback.

      1. Edward Ortiz

Absolutely! You’re very welcome, my friend.

  24. P. J. Gudka

  27. SiriusSea

Mary ❤ … Thank you for this beautiful reminder. Behind every number is a face, a name, a story, and a life deeply loved by God. My prayer is that we never lose sight of that. May our hearts remain tender toward the hurting, the lonely, the forgotten, and the vulnerable, and may we always find small ways to bring a little more kindness into the world. Thank you for speaking so compassionately for all life ~ 😇

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Your words ring like a prayer, Ms. Siri. Thank you for your powerful insight, my friend.

  28. Rakesh K. Singh

Thank you for bringing these often-overlooked struggles into one conversation, ma’am.

Every statistic represents a life, a struggle, and a story.

And, at the same time, it asks us to notice, to care, and to do what we can.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Beautifully said, Rakesh. These are not numbers but people in need. Thank you for adding your voice here. I appreciate you.

      1. Rakesh K. Singh

        Thanks, ma’am.

I often think of those in need and feel heartbroken and helpless to make a difference. Your post extends my pondering with the sobering statistics. Thank you, Mary.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, sweet Michele. We are never helpless. We make the world softer, gentler with love, smiles, prayer, and are written and spoken words. You do this every day, Love.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

That’s wonderful that you care for the elderly, Priestess. We need you!

  34. katiesencouragementforyou

Often, when I read about the needs of the world, I get overwhelmed, and then I remind myself, that I am not God, but I am part of His body–and I have a small part to play–in this world of hurting people. I look at Jesus–He worked with a small group of men when He was on earth, and He gave us the principle of multiplication–2 Tim 2:2. So I pour my life into a small group of people, and they do the same, and so on, and so on–and we all make a difference, one soul at a time. God bless you Mary K.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Exactly, Katie. I’m sure the people around you feel your love and compassion. Thank you for your very kind and thoughtful comment. I appreciate you.

      1. katiesencouragementforyou

        Thank you Mary! 🙂

  35. K. Ravindra

Dear Mary, What a meaningful reminder, thank you. No number is just a number; each one is a person with a story, cherished by God.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Your comment is profound, Ravindra. No one is a number, but the numbers are alarming. Thank you for taking the time to read and comment.

  36. Praveen Yadav

Yes my friend, we must respect everyone. Whatever a person gives to others, he gets the same in return. Only if you respect them will you get it too.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Very true, Praveen. Thank you for visiting, my friend.

      1. Praveen Yadav

        Welcome dear Mary
