Epsom Salts for Pain Relief

When something continues to work easily and economically for centuries, it’s likely because there are good reasons for its use. Epsom salts is one of those old, tried and true solutions. Many homes have stashed the product in their bathrooms since its discovery more than 400 years ago.

In 1618, a man named Henry Wicker was tending his cattle in the town of Epsom, England. Wicker realized that the cattle were not drinking from a particular spring. Upon further investigation, he found that the water tasted bitter and left a white, salty residue. He also discovered that the animals’ wounds healed faster after exposure to the water. The water had a laxative property, as well.

The white residue was later identified as magnesium sulfate, and the town of Epson soon became a destination for travelers seeking health benefits from the healing and relaxing waters. After decades of disputes over rights to the spring, its water, and health benefits, the town’s popularity ceased.

However, “Epsom salts” continued to be used as a bath additive for muscle pain and skin ailments. In fact, my functional medicine doctor recently recommended that I take “soaking baths” with it added to the water. She said that the magnesium in Epsom salts helps regulate neurotransmitters related to sleep and stress reduction, and it acts as an antioxidant, which is helpful for detoxification.

The recommendation is to fill a bathtub with warm water. Add one to two cups of Epsom salts, and soak for up to 40 minutes. The first 20 minutes are said to draw out toxins, while during the remaining time, minerals are absorbed.

I am too impatient to spend 40 minutes in the tub, but I have found that I sleep well after an Epsom salt bath for even half the time. Most likely, this is because the salt water eliminates the muscle pain that I often have from fibromyalgia and Lyme disease.

I prefer a shower over a bath, but I also prefer a natural way to ease the pain rather than taking prescription medication. My doctor recommends the brand, Ancient Minerals, which consists of magnesium flakes rather than crystals and dissolves easily.

We’re all in a hurry, but we have more time to do what we want when we take a few minutes for our personal health. As I remind my caregiving friends, we can’t care for anyone else if we don’t care for ourselves.

Thank you for this beautiful post, Mary. I’ve been using Epsom salts for quite a whole as well, but wasn’t exactly sure why. Except for the way it smells and makes me feel. Thank you for educating me on this beautiful avenue to natural health.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

That’s great to hear, Neal. I’m happy it works for you. Have a fabulous afternoon, my friend.

  3. Monkey’s Tale

I didn’t know that there was a town called Epsom! I remember my mom soaking her feet in Epsom salts. I never have, but you make a strong point here for it. Maggie

    1. Mary K. Doyle

I bet you can find the product nearly everywhere you travel, Maggie. It might be helpful after a long hike. Thank you for commenting.

  4. kagould17

A good summary of the powers of natural products Mary. In this modern medical marvel society, so many of the old cures have been forgotten. We actually had to go looking for Epsom salts a few months back to heal a skin condition. Happy Wednesday. Allan

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Interesting, Allan. I hope it worked for you. It’s certainly affordable and easy to use. Hugs to you, my friend.

  6. vermavkv

This is a wonderfully informative and personal piece! 🌿✨ I love how you’ve woven together history, science, and personal experience to highlight the enduring benefits of Epsom salts. Thank you very much, Vijay. Your words are very thoughtful and kind. Blessings to you.

  7. Mags Win

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Mags. I’ve used it in the past, as well, but I honestly didn’t know about it. Thank you for commenting.

      Thank you for stopping by.

  10. Nancy Homlitas

My daughter uses Epsom salts in her young children’s bath water when they’re ill. Soaking in an Epsom salt bath would be a good habit to adopt, especially during the viral months. Thanks for detailing the history and benefits of it. I’m more apt to use it now but, like you, I’m not fond of baths. 🙂

    1. Mary K. Doyle

I never thought about using the salts in the children’s baths, Nancy. That is a great suggestion. Maybe keep a bag on hand for a chilly, winter night. As always, I appreciate you and your words, my friend.

    2. Rohitash

Does it also helps to remove body eczema

      1. Nancy Homlitas

Epsom salts are anti-inflammatory, so it will likely soothe skin irritation from eczema. When my grandchildren get a lot of mosquito bites, It even helps reduce the itching. 😁

  11. Looking for the Light

Acient Minerals makes a great hand cream as well, I’ve used it for years. My baths have included Dead Sea Salt but it might be time to mix with Epson Salt. It’s a triend and true.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

I’ll check out the hand cream, Melinda. I didn’t know about this brand. I hope you are doing well. Love to you.

      1. Looking for the Light

It’s one of the best sellers on Amazon which where I buy inexpensive from.

        1. Rohitash

Do you have any link to it

          1. Looking for the Light

No, but you can find it easily on Amazon because that is where I bought mine from.

    2. Rohitash

How is dead sea s…different from this one

      1. Looking for the Light

I can’t recall the exact ingredients but I think Ancient Minerals is more Magnesium based. It’s a long time since I’ve used. I used the cream, it was good for light arthritis pain. I didn’t use the bath kind. I have cognative impairment so I don’t remember that far back. 🙂

        1. Rohitash

Ok Thanks for your kind information.

  12. Michael Watson PhD

Ah! The oft heard refrain: “Where is the Epson Salts?”

    1. Mary K. Doyle

LOL. I hope that means the salts bring you comfort, my friend.

  13. Rosaliene Bacchus

Mary, thanks for this reminder about the healing properties of Epsom salts.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

You’re very welcome, Rosaliene. When I learn something new or am reminded of something, I try to pass it on before I forget! Happy Wednesday to you!

      1. Rosaliene Bacchus

Happy Wednesday to you, too, Mary!

    2. Rohitash

Yes ..I too heard that salt heals…I am also a new user to it

  14. Joseph Glidden

    Very interesting. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

You are very welcome, dear Joseph.

  15. Violet Lentz

As long as it is pure and not scented a tablespoon every now and again as a laxative works painlessly. Great article, Mary.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

That’s interesting, Violet. I’m glad to know it works for you. Have a great afternoon.

    2. Rohitash

How do we check its purity Violet

  16. Phil Strawn

My late late late grandmother, a Cherokee Shaman medicine woman believed in the healing power of Epson salts, she was convinced it cured everything from tonsilitis to cancer. If my cousins or me looked a bit “pinked” the cure was a large dose of Epson salts, mixed in water and drank until the glass was empty, and so were we. I use it in my garden to give the plants a boost of minerals and to keep them regular. Good read.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you for adding to this conversation, Phil. How cool to have a Cherokee Shaman medicine woman in your ancestry. And, very interesting that she believed in the healing properties of Epsom salts taken orally. I’d forgotten that we can also add it to the garden. I truly appreciate your input here, my friend.

    2. Rohitash

Does or also comes in different colors. What do you suggest is the best one.

  17. Mary K.

  18. Eternity

This is a wonderful article. I suffer from insomnia. Melatonin 15 mg has been good, especially with the added Lunesta 3 Mg tabs. My sleep doctor is highly recommended, but I have to wonder why he didn’t offer any of your thoughts. Thx for the post

    1. Mary K. Doyle

I see a functional medicine doctor who considers both traditional and alternative medicine. We don’t need pharmaceuticals for every ailment.

      1. Rohitash

Is it also consumable with water Mary ?

        1. Mary K. Doyle

I’ve read that in small doses it can be consumed, but I would ask your physician.

          1. Rohitash

Ok Mary Thanks for this information

      2. Eternity

        I totally agree with you.

  19. arlene

Thank you for this Mary. I believe in the efficacy of magnesium.😘

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Good to hear, Arlene. We need all these little things

  20. Anonymous

Thank-you! Great Advice! I may take it as a challenge to be still for 40 minutes, and an experiment to see how prune-like my skin would be after that time!

    1. Mary K. Doyle

      LOL.

  21. Kym Gordon Moore

Honey Mary, I’ve been bathing in Epsom Salts since it was the go-to pain reliever growing up. I still have my supply of Epsom Salts for my baths. I have a DO NOT DISTURB sign outside our MBR when I bathe, which is about an hour and 15 minutes to an hour and 30 minutes. It’s also great for plants too. I’ve been using Dr. Teal’s forever. Great reminder my friend. 🛁🧽🛀🏻

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Wow! You are awesome, Lady Kym. I’m proud of you for caring for yourself. Love you very much.

      1. Kym Gordon Moore

Girl Mary, gotta do something to soothe these aches and pains! LOL 😂😝😆

  22. Herald Staff

I had never heard the origins of the use of Epsom salts before. I appreciate the knowledge, and wholeheartedly agree they can be useful in many settings. My parents always swore by them, and I found out they were right! I never considered the importance of the magnesium absorption for other benefits before. Very informative, Mary!

    –Scott

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Scott. I appreciate you sharing your own perspective here.

    2. Rohitash

It is ok if the body absorbs more magnisium during baths?

  23. Edward Ortiz

My wife takes baths with Epsom salts all the time. I might need to start including them in my weekly routine, maybe do some light reading in the process. Thank you for the information, Mary.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Your wife knows the secret, Edward. You might ask to steal some of her stash and take a few minutes for yourself.

      1. Edward Ortiz

Yes, and I know where her stash is, so I’m good.

        1. Mary K. Doyle

          LOL.

    2. Rohitash

Is it the same as sulphur salt?

      1. Mary K. Doyle

        I’m sorry. I don’t know that.

      2. Edward Ortiz

        Thank you.

  24. joannerambling

I use to have an epsom salt bath to ease my aching body but not any more as I don’t have a bath tub anymore

    1. Mary K. Doyle

How about soaking your feet in the salts? I do think the bath is better, but a foot soak is relaxing, also. Thank you for commenting, Joanne.

  25. Lori Pohlman

I have never used Epsom salts, Mary, but now I’m convinced it’s worth a try! Bonus for me because I love baths! My husband does too. Thanks for writing about this!

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Oh, wonderful, Lori. Enjoy warm soothing baths.

    2. Rohitash

      Does it also cure arthritis?

      1. Mary K. Doyle

I doubt that Epsom salt is a cure for anything. It just helps relieve symptoms, especially if someone lacks magnesium.

        1. Rohitash

          Ok

  26. Rebecca Cuningham

Magnesium baths are so soothing and relaxing.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Great to hear that you already know the benefits, Rebecca. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

      1. Rebecca Cuningham

Yes, love them. Great for relaxing sore muscles, calm down insect bites and mellow the mood.

        1. Rohitash

          Ok

  27. mjeanpike

I soak in Epsom Salts weekly. It really does help!

    1. Rohitash

Is it good for everyone to use or some restrictions.

      1. Mary K. Doyle

        Yes, thank you for commenting.

    2. Mary K. Doyle

That’s great to hear, M Jean. Thank you for telling us.

  28. Michele Lee

Interesting history. Thank you for sharing, Mary. I’m glad you’re finding relief from the practice. I’ve gotten away from routine of taking Epsom salt baths after dancing, choosing quicker showers instead, but you’ve motivated me to get back to it. Thank you for the brand recommendation. Like you wrote, we need to care for ourselves. 🦋

    1. Mary K. Doyle

I understand the shortage of time for pampering, Sweet Michele, but after an intense workout, you may find it to be worth the indulgence. Love you!

      1. Michele Lee

Love you, too! You’re so right and thank you. I will give it a go after class tonight.

  29. blainerestaurantreport

I had no idea as to the history of epsom salt. Thanks for the history lesson! It’s also good for your garden.

    1. Rohitash

Do plants also love this salt?

      1. Mary K. Doyle

I’ve read and many commented on the use of Epsom salts in the soil. But then, I believe it depends on what the soil is lacking and what the particular plants need.

        1. Rohitash

          Ok yes ….

      2. blainerestaurantreport

The best answer is it depends. If your soil is magnesium deficient, it’s great! Here’s an article:

        1. Rohitash

Ok thanks for this piece of information.

  30. The Mindful Migraine Blog

Oh I didn’t know the history – how interesting!

As for it’s use, I’m torn: I DO enjoy having a salt-bath, but I get uncomfortable if I sit there too long (like you, I can’t do 40 minutes) so it is a bit hit and miss whether I get the benefits. Linda xx

    1. Mary K. Doyle

I guess if you can’t relax, then it is of little value. On the other hand, perhaps the restful period may be of great help. Only you know what is best for you, dear Linda.

      1. The Mindful Migraine Blog

We really are all unique! My sisters both love a long soak in the tub from when we were young, I’ve always been too fidgety to stay still that long! Have a wonderful weekend! L (MM) xx

  31. Ana Daksina

You are so right about the ancient knowledges ~ and this is such a good one, too, inexpensive and easy to practice!…

I wonder, since I don’t have a bathtub, whether if I covered my skin in a good thick decoction and then dressed real warmly for an hour or so before rinsing, I’d get the same results? Maybe if I spread a plastic sheet and relaxed through it ~ what do you think?

In any case, thank you so much for sharing this valuable tool available to all!

If you would like a perfect blizzard of Earth-oriented solutions for every problem from acne to household flies, head over to WP’s ‘Magic and Beauty’, where she gives us, here in the West, the benefit of her Croatian knowledge. Stuff you can’t even find here. If you go over there, tell her I sent you 👌

    1. Mary K. Doyle

I will check your friend’s site, Ana. Thank you for the heads up.

As far as not having a tub, perhaps you can do a foot bath. There also are magnesium lotions by the same company that you can try. I hope they work for you. Thank you for taking the time to comment!

      1. Ana Daksina

WHAT a good idea! Many thanks! 👌

  32. WearingTwoGowns

Thank you for sharing this, Mary. You’ve touched on something really important here – the value of starting with gentle, non-invasive approaches before turning to pharmaceuticals.
I think there’s truth to the idea that pain involves both physical and psychological components, but that doesn’t make the physical relief any less real or necessary. What I love about your Epsom salt approach is that it addresses both aspects – the magnesium provides genuine physiological benefits for muscle tension and inflammation, while the ritual of taking time for a warm, healing bath addresses the stress and mental tension that often amplify physical pain.
For those of us dealing with chronic conditions like fibromyalgia or other pain issues, these simple, accessible remedies can be game-changers. Even if part of the benefit comes from the mind-body connection – taking time to care for ourselves, the warmth, the relaxation – that doesn’t diminish the real relief it provides.
I appreciate you sharing both the science and your personal experience. Sometimes the best medicine really is the simplest and most affordable option that’s been helping people for centuries

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Welcome, and thank you for adding so much to this post. You make several valid and important points. I appreciate your input here!

First time I heard about Epsom salt, but I’m glad it helps your health, Mary. Stay healthy.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Hazel. I’m not sure if you have the product in the Philippines. It’s been around a long time, so maybe.

      1. Hazel

Maybe we have that here, but it isn’t popular enough. My pleasure, Mary.

  34. Phil Strawn

A small amount added to the soil around a plant helps add minerals, use sparingly and it does wonders.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

That’s great to know, Phil. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

  35. gc1963

Very informative post. I don’t know whether this salt is available here. It is better to go in for alternative therapy like salt bath etc instead of painkillers.

Mary, I love epson baths! It’s particularly nice in winter when I’ve been surfing… peel off the wetsuit, teeth chattering and slip in… aah! 🙂 The lavender one is very calming and helps me sleep. Interesting about the first 20 min (detox) and 2nd (absorption). I bring my phone in with me and scroll through WP or SM and 45 min flies by 😎

    1. Mary K. Doyle

That’s fabulous, Darryl. You exercise, get outside, and go home to relax. Perfect.

Thanks! Good, solid info… I’ve used sitz baths with epsom salts several times and have found them very helpful.

I remember as a kid my mother soaking feet in Epsom Salts. She even had me trying it too. Now many years later I have severe rheumatoid arthritis as did my mother. I’m definitely going to buy a container of Epsom Salt. It’s time to return to the tried and true. Thank you so much for sharing this very important information. ❤️✌️
