Poem–Save Your Sanity

Save Your Sanity

Don’t listen to the disturbing rants.
Don’t watch what causes stress.
Change the station of hostility
to one that’s uplifting.

Counter the negative rhetoric
with words of compassion.
Listen to music or read a book.
Walk in the wind and sun.

Save your sanity with empathy.
Assist a friend in need.
Nourish yourself and one another
with peace, love, and support.

Very beautifully said as usual Mary 😊 we all need to save our sanity from the annoyances of life which don’t need our time or energy to thrive off of 🙏

Thank you, Laura. I’m hearing so many people expressing stress over the election. We can turn it off and give ourselves some peace. We can do little else about the outcome. Hugs to you, my sweet friend.

  9. Tony

    Bonjour Mary,

  32. johnlmalone

very wise words, Mary; even over here in Oz we get glimpses of the crazy, unhinged, the rhetoric of rant; stay centred indeed —-

    1. Mary K. Doyle

It’s intense here right now, and there is fear of what will happen when Trump loses.

Well said. I agree with you. There is so much of negativity, in politics and in the name of religion in our country. And Whatsapp is a convenient way to spread them. But we cannot do without Whatsapp. I just delete such forwards. I don’t need that extra in my life. Thank you.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Unfortunately, the whole word is seeing this. You are so right. We need to set boundaries on all the nonsense. Thank you for taking the time to add to this discussion.

Wonderful poem Mary, I review poetry past and present on my own page.

I hope you don’t mind, but I did that for this poem. I’ve shared the link below. If you have any issues, I’ll immediately take it down.

Great message Mary, I always enjoy your work. Thank you for the positivity here.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Hello, Adam. Thank you for taking the time to review my poem. I appreciate you and your work.

  42. hubertprevy

On one evening, I asked my wife and kids to read this poem and analyze it. To my surprise, each one agreed with a different part of the poem.

While I was inclined to agree with the poem in its entirety, my wife resonated only with the last paragraph. Her view—rooted in her business background—was that ignoring sources of stress would inevitably detach us from reality, ultimately leading to one’s downfall.

Next were my kids. Though inevitably lacking the maturity and experience of their adult counterparts, I’ve come to respect their opinions—often still untouched by the daily barrage of information thrown our way. I admire their social and emotional intelligence, which often surpasses my own, and the way their young minds are still eager to ask questions rather than supplying the ready-made answers so often imposed upon us.

The middle one opined: “Like dad, he loves watching the nature and adventures, but why he doesn’t want to leave the house?”

His mom stepped in to defend me: “That’s not true; he goes to work and jogs regularly.”

But my eldest one chimed in: “Like in the poem, he ‘doesn’t watch what causes stress’, but Mom cannot live without stress and then we are all stressed along.”

The youngest one chimed in: “What is stress?”

Mom (irritated): “Am I really causing you stress?”

The eldest one to the youngest one, who was on the verge of bursting into crying: “Now you see, this is stress.”

Naturally, I stepped in to defend my wife and their mom: “Mom doesn’t want you to be stressed, can you remember the knight movie we watched on the weekend”

    All kids unison: “Yes!”

I went on: “So Mom is like the shield, which protect us from the hits. And when a shield is hit, the knight gets shattered by the hit. The knight is our family and when he shatters, is like what you call ‘the stress’”

The middle one: “And who is the sword?”

The eldest one: “Dad is the saddle, he’s always getting his free ride…”

Mom (in irritated resolve): “No, Dad is no saddle, he’s the battle axe hanging in the scabbard and watch out the world, when he gets angry…”

    The youngest one: “I want a horse…”

In the end, it would inevitably draw out into a long discussion, delving into details and perspectives that might not easily find resolution…

    1. Mary K. Doyle

It’s very cool you analyzed the poem as a family. I love all the comments and can hear everyone chiming in. I don’t advocate stress avoidance on a regular basis. This is an intense time in the US with a highly divisive election. Sometimes, it gets overwhelming. Thank you for all of this, Hubert.

      1. hubertprevy

You see, we had a divisive debate ourselves, the reason being a serene poem 🙂

My theory is, to avoid such division in politics, we must start with our kids and teach them to think critically. I keep telling them: don’t trust everything you find in Google. One day I will teach them the Scientific Method to analyze things.

And I keep telling my friends: never trust a news which is free, trust only news whose only source of income are readers’ subscriptions. Even then, keep scrutinizing and use several unrelated sources.

        1. Mary K. Doyle

          Excellent point, Hubert. Thank you.
