The President Who Represents Me

On November 5, 2024, Americans vote in a presidential election. Early voting has already begun in many areas, including where I live. I proudly and enthusiastically submitted my vote last week.

Every election is important, but Americans are particularly invested in presidential campaigns. The president is the head of state, head of government, and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces. It is the president’s responsibility to enforce laws created by Congress. The president is also privileged to issue executive orders and extend pardons for federal crimes.

Most importantly, our president represents us and the people we are. The president acts with the American individuals in mind both within our country and the world at large. This elected official embodies our interests, values, and goals, as well as offers an example of leadership for our children to emulate.

To be considered for candidacy, United States presidents must be 35 years of age or older, be natural-born citizens, and have lived in the country for at least 14 years.

Unfortunately, presidents are elected via the 538 electors in the Electoral College. According to usa.gov, the winner of each state’s residential votes goes to the state’s number of electoral votes. For example, Illinois has 19 electoral votes. Whoever wins the majority of votes in Illinois gets all those 19 votes. A candidate needs at least 270 electoral votes to win the presidency.

This bizarre election process has resulted in five elections awarded to individuals who did not win the majority of votes, the popular vote. In addition, twice in American history, no candidate attained the majority of electoral votes. On those occasions, the House of Representatives selects the winner. A constitutional amendment would have to be made to change this law.

Abraham Lincoln is regarded as the greatest president in US history. (He was president from March 4, 1861 until his assassination on April 15, 1865.) This acknowledgment is based on his leadership during the Civil War and the abolition of slavery. Other achievements and qualities include his approval of the printing of paper currency, the re-establishment of a national banking system, and his powerful Gettysburg Address. Lincoln’s leadership style, efforts to unify the American people, relationship with Congress, the belief that there should be justice for all, honesty, and intelligence are also highly praised.

According to the Council of Catholic bishops, when choosing a candidate for office, our primary concern should be for the common good, the care of the poor, and social justice. The dignity of life is to be respected from conception to death for all people regardless of their financial status, ethnicity, creed, or gender orientation.

News media and public polls claim that the 2024 Presidential campaign is close. Many Americans find this difficult to believe because of their convictions about a particular candidate or party and challenge to understand the draw to the other very different candidate.

My vote went to the candidate I believe is best qualified to represent my views on social justice, peace, honesty, national unity, and the dignity of all people throughout their entire life. She is also someone I believe is a positive role model for my grandchildren.

Please pray for the United States and a peaceful election and transition of power that results in the best possible president for our country and the world.

  6. Looking for the Light

I don’t care for the electoral process, what it says is that people’s votes don’t matter, it is who we pick from a small pool of people. Doesn’t sound legal to me. I vote anyway so I feel like I’ve done my part and I’m voting for the candidate who places her truth and has a plan for the future. Trump has already said there would be another Jan. 6th if he didn’t win, I hope that is taken seriously and completely cut off the entrance to the capital with huge cement blocks out at the streets to keep people from getting close. I want air support and I don’t think Trump should be allowed to have a rally that close to the building. I know you can’t stop the determined few but with enough heavy armor, gun support, tasers, reinforced windows and doors we can get through the counting without a repeat.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

All sound points, Melinda. I hope there is a lot of safety precautions in place.

  7. Laura

Appreciate you sharing your view in a positive way, Mary 🙏 I try to stay away from politics if I can on the blog, but I do admire when people can eloquently share your views such as you always do, Mary 😊

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Laura. I never want to be offensive, but I did want to express my choice and why. I certainly understand why you avoid the hot topic. Have a safe evening, Sweet Girl. I pray Florida does not suffer any more destruction.

      1. Laura

Thank you so much Mary 🙏 all is OK here but luckily I’m not in its direct path ❤️

    I hoje, but not believe.

  9. Kym Gordon Moore

Beautifully composed and expressed Mary. It would be good if the rationale for what is best for all people, is taken into consideration. But my friend, I’ve added some extra doses of fasting and praying in my regular regimen for peace, honesty, and not stirring up a violent mess as we have seen in the past. 🙏🏼 I think about the generations that are following in our footsteps, and we must have leadership on so many levels that will help our children to be morally better, better equipped, more educated, financially sound, and more productive than we were. We have to leave our country, planet and families more empowered and equipped to stand against the forces of tyranny that we have to defeat, survive and elevated to thrive. Bless you and thank you for sharing my dear! 🥰💖😊💞🌍

    1. Mary K. Doyle

You are certainly on track here, Kym. Our parents may have debated on the choice of candidates, but there wasn’t violence or grudges held.

Is united state of America is safe, Thank you Vladimir Dgama

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Safe is a relative term. It depends on the location, and that could vary by less than a mile. Most of the US is safe, but we have had events such as on January 6, 2020 where chaos spread across the country.

  13. Rosaliene Bacchus

Mary, I appreciate your clearheaded and rational view of electing our next president. Thanks for casting your vote. I join with you in praying for a peaceful election and transition of power ❤

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Rosaliene. Peace is the ultimate prayer. I hope we never see another January 6 event again.

  14. philsblog01

Personally I think Electoral votes should be awarded proportionally. If you get 40% of the vote, you should get 40% of the Electoral votes. I also would like to extend this to the House Of Reps. This way you could get multiple, diverse parties, and it would pay to campaign in every state, the way it used to be. Instead of the current terrible situation where a handful of states can determine the outcome. The duopoly is dying, the two party system is in chaos, in my opinion.

    1. Dorothy’s New Vintage Kitchen

      Totally agree!

Beautifully said Mary! One of the most important lines is about being a role model. That says it all.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Dorothy. I tried to give food for thought without being offensive.

I am reading an extended profile on Kamela Harris in an Australian periodical and am dumbfounded by all her achievements which I was not aware of till now —

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Kamala Harris has an incredible record, and I’m happy your Australian periodical notes that, John. There are a lot of false truths spread by the other party.

      1. johnlmalone

yes, I’m more aware of them now, thanks to the four page photo article —

  18. Neal Saye

I LOVE this post, Mary. You write so beautifully. When I start writing about presidential politics, I rant and rave and sound ridiculous. Thank you for this insightful and encouraging post. And may … “she” come out the victor.

Great post, Mary. First, with the history and the icon president who represents a good leader. Hope your country maintains peace throughout the election.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Festo. We do need prayers and good vibes.

  24. Pooja G

I think you picked a candidate after thinking it through very rationally and that’s great. It’s important to pick someone that respects the people of the country and wants what’s best for them. And I hope your country has a peaceful election and that people remain peaceful no matter what the results are. I think people sometimes get too passionate and forget that the candidates are supposed to be opponents, not enemies.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Yes! Your contribution to this discussion is spot on, Pooja. Thank you for taking the time to read and comment.

      1. Pooja G

Thanks, it’s just how I feel after years of dedicating my life to studying history and politics. It’s always a pleasure to read your posts.

      Thank you, Hitasakhi.

  28. lbeth1950

Well done. I agree the president should support the common good. I do hope people think rationally and don’t perpetuate hatred and violence.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Yes! Everyone is entitled to their choice. We should respect that.

  29. mistermaxxx08

I respect you and your gift, however I’ll never vote for none of those so called candidates, because Until Black People get reparations its not for me, Abraham Lincoln didn’t free no Slaves, how can you call someone Free when you are still stuck in said Country? explain why it took 99 years to get the Civil rights bill passed in 1964? explain Black votes just getting to vote in 1965? explain away how if two people one Black and the Other White wanted to get Married in America until 1967 it was a Felony?

explain how there were still Platantions in the 60’s? Legalize busing? anyway I’ll stop because when I express myself like I do, nobody wants to hear what a Black Man who is one generation removed from Legalized Jim Crow gotta say, make it make sense?

    1. Mary K. Doyle

I understand and I hear you, Mister Maxxx.

  30. Kymber Hawke

I appreciate this message of calm common sense. If only everyone would follow that advice when they vote.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Kymber. May our whole election season be peaceful.

  31. Garden Bliss

Great overview of your election process, Mary. As Australians we follow the US in many ways, especially when it comes to ethical issues. Watching and praying for us all.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Please keep in mind that ethical pertains to many issues. Some here get stuck on abortion but forget about respecting life form conception to death. We have assault weapons, hunger, social injustice, and death penalty to also consider.

      1. Garden Bliss

Yes indeed, I taught ethics at a high school for many years and covered many of these topics with my students.

  32. Amy

Well said, Mary! I agree wholeheartedly. I, too, pray for the United States and a peaceful election and transition of power.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you so much, Amy. Our prayers are vital at this point. Peace please.

  33. Gregory Selkirk

“Only the repeal of the 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution would reset our country onto the right track.”

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Do you think that will ever happen, Gregory? Thank you for adding to the discussion.

  34. Baydreamer – Lauren Scott

Well said, Mary. Times are frightening with the vitriol and violence. We, too, are praying for a peaceful transition of power and not a repeat of Jan. 6th if that is the outcome. Fingers crossed and prayers continuing. I am now following you and look forward to reading more. 🌷

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Lauren. I’m following you, as well.

      1. Baydreamer – Lauren Scott

Finally someone with common sense! It’s a breath of fresh air to see this post

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you so much! That is so good to hear. I appreciate you reading and adding to the conversation.

  36. Michele Lee

Excellent post, Mary! Helpful information for those not familiar with the U.S. presidential election process, which is confusing even for natural born citizens.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

It sure is, Michele! Thank you for reading and commenting.

      1. Michele Lee

        Thanks for the valuable lesson.

I love how you phrased some people get “stuck” on abortion. I do think it is so important to remember to look at the entire spectrum, from life until death. What about quality of life?? Are we going to protect that child and give them the resources they need to survive, thrive, and be successful? Or are we going to throw them into the fire and watch them suffer? 😞 We need to vote for a candidate that values life, but that includes EVERY person’s life–no matter race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, demographics, etc. I just watched a wonderful movie yesterday called A Case for Love. I think we can all learn a lot from it.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you for your important comments. I will look for that movie. I appreciate you here!

  38. Bob Christian

Watching with interest from the UK, hopefully common sense will prevail in November.
Also be a lesson to future generations, that while all Americans can be president, it should not be the case.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Welcome to Midwest Mary, Bob. It is a pleasure seeing you here. I wish you were a voter in the US. We could use you in the swing states, the ones likely to determine the election. I don’t understand the draw to the “other” candidate.

  39. TheVampireJCS

This is geared towards common sense, understanding and wisdom. It was well written, as not to stir anyone, which is highly respectful. Thank you for posting ♥️

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you. I appreciate your feedback. I didn’t want to hurt anyone, just state some observations.

      1. TheVampireJCS

        You’re welcome.

  40. hubertprevy

Without this – to some bizarre – electoral system, the decision would lay in the hands of voters from big cities. As a history aficionado, I can conclude, that this would be ultimately devastating, at least in the long term.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Really? I need to learn more about this. Thank you for your guidance.

      1. hubertprevy

I just made an analysis and took a closer look at the subject. I have no original source data, but obviously some 2 centuries ago, before working out the electoral system did their job and – factoring in the economy and geography specifics – came up with an electoral system, which allows for an geographical expansion (i.e. thinly populated areas), takes into consideration the existence of crucial, yet thinly populated areas, and foresaw the rise in size of cities.

This system should be perhaps updated or its parametrics re-tuned, but is far from wrong in its concept.

        1. Mary K. Doyle

I appreciate your input and understand the system differently now. Thank you.

  41. Jasper Hoogendam

For a democracy to function, we need an educated population that has learned critical thinking skills to properly understand the issues and what is at stake.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you for your important comment. Good to see you here, Jasper.

  42. kagould17

American elections baffle us poor Canadians up here in the soon to be 51st state. 😉Why do they take 2 years and billions of dollars to complete and with all the checks and balances in place, how can a convicted felon be elected over a former prosecutor? I am indeed praying for America and for Governor Trudeau and our 51st state. Chaos and lies reign these days, it would seem. Happy Thursday Mary. Allan

    1. Mary K. Doyle

I wonder the same, Allan. And so do most of my friends and family. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the election was tampered with. So much is odd about that election. Please do keep us in your prayers.
