Garden Update

Summer’s abundance is blessing the Midwest. Daily harvesting of plum tomatoes, San Marzano tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, jalapenos, and bell peppers keeps the bowl on my kitchen counter filled.

The cherry tomato plant that began in early spring in the hydroponic box and was moved outside in May has granted a steady handful of daily tomatoes for several weeks.

With the summer heat, lettuce, which prefers cooler temperatures, is now grown hydroponically inside.

I haven’t noticed a difference in taste between the San Marzano tomatoes and plum tomatoes.

The two types of tomatoes look the same.

Both the San Marzano and plum tomatoes are long and plump.

This plant is producing about one green pepper per week.

The flowers bring joy, as well. Here is pink Dipladenia and alyssum,

white Dipladenia,

and rose colored Dipladenia.

This fun plant can be grown indoors or outside and is known by many names including tradescantia nanouk Nanouk tradescantia, fantasy venice, wandering jew, spiderwort, tradescantia bubblegum, and tradescantia albiflora.

And lastly, we have cosmos which are growing much taller than I expected.

Everything looks ❤️wonderful!! Up until six months ago, I also used hydroponics for cherry tomatoes and different types of lettuce. I took a break from it for now, but especially living in an apartment for almost three years before I moved, I loved having my own little garden. I also tried other veggies as well.

I grew cosmos and other flowers many years ago when I owned a house–they’re easy and have such an array of colors! Enjoy the beauty and your great harvest!😊🍅🥬🌸🏵️

    1. Mary K. Doyle

We learn what grows best by hydroponics, don’t we? The leafy lettuce seems to be what is best for me. Have you tried any flowers?

The cosmos are surprisingly beautiful. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

  3. kagould17

Looking good Mary. We are hoping for a bit of heat here, after a week of rain. Tomatoes are ripening, but sun is required. My delphiniums and hostas are crazy with blooms right now. Happy Monday. Allan

    1. Mary K. Doyle

The delphiniums must be stunning, Allan.

  4. Indira

Your garden must be so beautiful! That is a colourful harvest, Mary.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Indira. It is small but mighty.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, CJ. I hope your day is going well.

      1. CJ Antichow

It was great thanks, minus the smoke lol

        1. Mary K. Doyle

We are getting the smoke here, as well. It’s dangerous to be outside but our temps are perfect.

          1. CJ Antichow

It’s so bad tonight that it looks dark out already and everything has an orange hue 😩

  7. Dorothy’s New Vintage Kitchen

Earth to table -these look so good!❤️

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Yes, Mary. There’s something special about eating what we grow. Hugs to you.

  10. Nancy Homlitas

Your vegetable and flower plants all look so healthy. For the limited space you have, your harvest is awesome! I heard lots of locusts on my morning walk. Are they in your area, too? If so, are they bothering your vegetation? 🙂

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Hi Nancy, locusts do eat vegetation, but cicadas don’t bother the garden. I wonder what type of cicadas you’re hearing. Thank you for commenting, my friend.

      1. Nancy Homlitas

The Brood XIV cicadas are in northeast Ohio now. 😁

  11. Rosaliene Bacchus

Amazing, Mary! Your tomatoes and green peppers are doing quite well. Isn’t it great to eat your own homegrown produce? Your flower garden is beautiful. I had no idea that the plant my former neighbor planted is known as the spiderwort (among other names). It wasn’t doing well in the sun, so I transplanted it into a pot and placed it in the shade. What a difference!

    1. Mary K. Doyle

That plant also likes good drainage, so if it still struggles, try one of the looser soil mixes. Isn’t it pretty? Thank you for commenting, my friend.

      1. Rosaliene Bacchus

Thanks for the tip about the best soil type. It is a pretty plant.

  12. Looking for the Light

Nice crops and flowers this season!

      1. Looking for the Light

        Flowers bring so much joy.

  13. Dawn Pisturino

    How fortunate you are!

    1. Mary K. Doyle

      I am indeed, Dawn.

  14. Phil Strawn

Lovely looking tomatoes. Mine were terrible this year. Bugs, Rabbits, Squirrels, you name the critter, ate all of them, or at least took a bite and ruined the crop. Having to settle for store-bought ones that are not tasty. Too hot in this part of Texas so everything dies from the heat.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

I just heard the same thing from a friend, Phil. My father used to yell outside at the critters to eat the whole thing or leave it alone–he said the same to us kids! I’m sorry your crops had so much attention from unwelcome little creatures.

  15. Violet Lentz

What a bountiful harvest for both the table and the eyes.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Violet. The produce is pretty in the bowl, as you say.

  16. Penn,…

    1. Mary K. Doyle

You are right about the giving of nature, Penn. Our weather has been conducive to great growth in this area. Thank you for your input, my friend.

  17. Michael Sammut

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Michael. Gardening certainly is satisfying.

      1. Michael Sammut

You’re welcome, Mary. It certainly is.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

There’s nothing tastier than homegrown produce. Thank you for your kind words, sweet Ms. Siri.

  22. Hazel

Green pepper is common here, but your various kinds of tomatoes look amazing, Mary. Dipladenia is beautiful.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

I didn’t know that you had peppers, Hazel. Do tomatoes grow in the Philippines? Thank you for joining the conversation.

      1. Hazel

Yes, we grow peppers and tomatoes here.

        My pleasure always, Mary.

  25. Mid-Life Mama

Interesting to see the progress and read that the taste is the same. So much healthier to grow your own vegetables. Lovely images of your summer growth!

    1. Mary K. Doyle

You’re right about that, MLM. When I cut my tomatoes open, I know I’m the only one who touched it, unlike the countless people down the chain when we buy them from the grocery store.

      1. Mid-Life Mama

        Exactly!

  26. P. J. Gudka

The flowers are beautiful and the veggies look like they’re growing nicely.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

They are giving me a steady crop, Pooja. All the best to you.

  27. Cindy Georgakas

Everything is coming up so beautifully and yeah for a wonderful garden., I’m jel, jel but at least I’ve gotten something!!! 😅💗

    1. Mary K. Doyle

You are so busy with family and other responsibilities, I can imagine gardening time is limited. I hope you are enjoying the day, dear Cindy.

      1. Cindy Georgakas

You have that right… I have to choose between what I run after and go first becomes lower on the priority list. But that said Star brought in a nice gopher fully intact. I’m sure she planned to eat it last night in my bathroom, but I got it just in time lol!
It was warm but dead so one down! Yay 😂🤩

        1. Mary K. Doyle

LOL. Lots of action in that house.

  28. Stephanie

  31. Edward Ortiz

Everything looks wonderful, Mary. I got a little lazy and just ordered my hydroponic system. Looking forward to setting up mine and starting to experiment.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

I’m finding the shorter plants do best. The holes are also close, so you may not want to fill them all. I’m looking forward to hearing how you do with it, Edward.

      1. Edward Ortiz

Cool! Thank you for the advice, Mary.

  32. Ilze

    Cosmos looks lovely!

  33. The Mindful Migraine Blog

Love all those tomato hues as they ripen – so good! Linda xx

    1. Mary K. Doyle

I made tomato sauce from my tomatoes. It was delicious. Nothing like home-grown. Thank you for commenting, MM.

      1. The Mindful Migraine Blog

How fabulous – we’re mostly herbs here – the possums eat everything else! xx

  34. blainerestaurantreport

Speaking of cherry tomatoes someone gave me a pack of these as a Christmas present. I started one plant. Next year and every year after I’ll plant three. They are great! Bigger than regular cherry tomatoes and delicious.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you for the link! Have the best day.

  35. Lori Pohlman

Your plants are so beautiful, Mary. What a joy! I’ve been having fun this summer with our library seed “check outs.” All library patrons are welcome to take home 2 packs of seeds a week throughout the growing season. It’s been exciting. And sometimes a bit sad, because the local mule deer have gobbled up most of what I planted in the ground. I can’t blame them, and I expected it, so most of the seeds went into pots that my husband and I dutifully take in and out of the house any time we’re gone long during the day, and every single night. Ha! We’ve got a few beans. Some hot peppers. Zinnias. Sunflowers. Cilantro. Rosemary. Poppies . . . It’s been a treat!

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Wow. That is dedication, Lori. I plant in pots because I’m in a small space. The good part is that we have control. Of course, the bad is bringing those pots in and out. May your flowers bloom and peppers, cilantro and rosemary grow tall and strong, my friend.

  36. Thotaramani

Lovely ones! It takes lots of patience to grow our own garden!💐

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Patience that is greatly rewarded. I appreciate seeing you here.
