Poem–The New America

The New America

The new normal, new America–
fear, prejudice, injustice, chaos.
Nepotism. Not positions for the qualified.
Benefits for the wealthy. The rest, swept away.

Some believe the end is near
they see the signs–
natural disasters, global unrest, the Anti-Christ.
Only God knows for sure.

The devil is chaos
and creates division.
Is that someone we want to revere,
someone we want to emulate and elevate?

I miss the America of my childhood–
not perfect, but sought truth, justice, compassion,
a country connected to the world,
one that appreciated and strived for diversity.

What can we do?
Be the example we want to see.
Find our own inner peace.
Pray, vote, speak up, and remain hopeful.

This piece is powerful and heartfelt.
You’ve captured the deep ache many feel — the loss of something we believed in, and the longing for unity, justice, and compassion.
Your words are a reminder that change begins within, and that hope is not weakness, but strength.
Thank you for writing with such clarity and courage.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you for understanding the challenge in speaking my truth. If I want to encourage others to do so, I must, as well. I appreciate your input.

  2. Escribir Y Sanar

Mary, your poem is powerful and deeply moving. You captured the pain and confusion of today’s reality while beautifully contrasting it with a time that, though imperfect, held more unity, compassion, and a striving for truth. I especially appreciate the way you ended—with hope and a call to action. “Be the example we want to see” is such a timely and necessary reminder. Thank you for using your voice to inspire reflection, courage, and faith in a better way forward.

  16. hubertprevy

I believe many of the current problems in the U.S. economy began when select financial institutions found ways to bypass the Glass-Steagall Act. Its full repeal only accelerated the trend, removing the last critical firewall against unchecked risk. In essence, Glass-Steagall functioned like a motor governor—limiting reckless acceleration. Once removed, the economic engine surged ahead, delivering impressive short-term performance, but ultimately overheated. What we’re witnessing now may well be the result of that burn.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you for your insight, Hubert. I don’t know about this but will have to check it out.

      1. hubertprevy

Anytime Mary, I hope more people will be learning of it.

  20. P. J. Gudka

I feel like people all around the world are losing their sense of empathy and compassion. It’s really sad to watch. Not saying things were perfect before but the last few years feel like things have gotten consistently worse.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

I hope and pray it turns around quickly, especially for your sake and all the young adults.

      1. P. J. Gudka

I hope so too. Every generation wants to inherit a planet that’s doing better then before but I don’t know if that will be the case for us.

  21. joannerambling

I feel this poem would be so relatable to far too many not just Americans but others around the world

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Joann. We can only do what is in our reach, but maybe, that’s enough.

  22. arlene

Gosh, when I think of what is happening now, I’m scared. Here in our country, politics is writing a dim view of everything.🙁

    1. Mary K. Doyle

That’s sad to hear, Arlene. Hopefully, and prayerfully, the pendulum will swing back.

  23. kagould17

Well penned Mary. It seems the pendulum is swinging too far to the right, when we need to meet in the middle. I never understood how people could elect a TV star, but it happened in Ukraine, so…. Let me just say Zelensky is head and shoulders above Agent Orange in doing what is right for his country and his people under incredibly trying circumstances. I fear the oligarchy is now too entrenched in the U.S. to be overturned. I hope I am wrong. Perhaps the rest of the world needs to join BRICS to survive. I can no longer stand the chaos and destruction, when certainty is required. Fingers (and toes) crossed for better times. Allan

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you for your valued input, Allan. I agree that Zelensky has his country’s interest at heart and doing all he can. Hugs to you, my friend.

  24. Violet Lentz

I agree with you whole heartedly. Throughout history governments have turned on their people- and ya know what? life goes on. I do not expect to see the current wrongs righted in my life time- but I will continue to do the next right thing until I can do nothing anymore.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

You’re right, Violet. Humanity has been confrontational, deceitful, and selfish since the beginning. You would think we’d get smarter along the way. I appreciate your input.

  25. Stephen Nielsen

Be a voice for good. Be a good person, Be a testimony of a Christian. Make America good again, Christian again.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Some of the Christians, such as Trump, are the worst examples of Christ. Our leader has no compassion. Christ taught us to love one another, care for one another as if they were Him.

  26. Cindy Georgakas

What a wonderful poem, Mary to rise to the occasion, use our voice and find moments in the day when we are at such a loss. Thanks for sharing and writing! 💕

    1. Mary K. Doyle

It’s not easy to speak our truth, is it, Cindy? We know that we place ourselves in a vulnerable position, but then, what will happen if we don’t speak up? I appreciate you, my friend.

      1. Cindy Georgakas

You are so very welcome, Mary! That’s exactly my sentiments and I’m glad we’re in it together! 🩷

  27. Michele Lee

  33. johnlmalone

yes, things must change, for the better. For all, not just the wealthy. Well said, Mary , and yes, it must be said —

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, John. The younger (than me) generation has so much damage to clean up in their future.

  34. Edward Ortiz

Wonderful poem, Mary. I agree with all of it, especially your last line. 🙏🏼

Thank you, Flavia. I appreciate your input from the other side of the globe.

  36. Max Muhammad

I respect what you said however in my background with Jim Crow and legalised Segregation it was never memorable just tolerated.

School system Hollywood etc.. told History and not the whole story. It’s always been Racist and corrupt.

But nobody asked me. The horror stories I heard growing up and still do. They want a Race War I truly believe and you can’t claim freedom until all are.

Bought their independence 249 years ago yet civil rights didn’t start until 1964. Equal voting in 65 and marrying another Race 1967.

That wasn’t that long ago not to mention all the wars for freedom yet separate barracks. Im through on it because it’s deep

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you for adding this important and shameful part of our history to this post, Mister Max. You make a good point about no one being free until all are free. I appreciate you, I hear and see you, my friend.

      1. Max Muhammad

If you haven’t please read what Malcolm X said about the politics back in 1962. In the 60s civil rights and marches black leaders killed and lynchings, busing etc… going on what Great America was there? This was only 60 years ago?

No rose colored glasses with me

        1. Mary K. Doyle

Nor should there be. What baffles me is why caring for one another, no matter the differences, hasn’t changed.

          1. Max Muhammad

because America is comfortable with being in denial and never had to share their Privilege

  37. Eternity

Thanks for your like of my post, “Jewish Prophets 3 – Isaiah Chapter 3;” you are very kind.

  38. Amy

Well said, Mary. It’s difficult to keep inner peace…

    1. Mary K. Doyle

We have to work at it to save our sanity, Amy. Thank you for joining the discussion.

Nicely worded. Permission to share please

And bring what we can.. to those in our own little sphere.. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.. that although I don’t have much money or even energy.. I have words.. so I bring these when I can.. my thought is that if we all bring what we can.. our best… well then that’s something… I think of the children’s story Stone Soup.. and how when everyone brings something.. life is so much better than before..

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Yes! That’s a fabulous way to think about this, Kimberly. Words matter.

      1. Kimberly Vargas Agnese

        🙂
