Poem–Playing with the Dead

Playing with the Dead

The game she played was child’s folly
before she understood
consequences of her actions
or potential dangers.

She’d brush her hair smooth and shiny
and look in the mirror
where the spirits stood behind her
quietly always there.

She didn’t know who they might be.
Perhaps family, friends
who passed from this life to the next
and now watched over her.

One bad day she wanted to leave,
go somewhere else but home.
She switched places with one spirit.
She went there. It went here.

What the spirit did in her place,
she didn’t know or care.
She had no worries over there.
Nothing to do or say.

She traveled back and forth at will.
a fun little secret.
stepping back when life would get tough.
Returning after rest.

All was fine until she got scared
and forgot where she was.
Was she with the living or dead?
She didn’t want to die.

She found her footing on this side,
and never left again.
But she does look back and wonder
if it was just a dream.

    This is so intriguing.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Lbeth. Have a fabulous day.

  2. Laura

Wow, Mary, I absolutely love this. Using the obsidian black mirror to cross into the other realm – deeply intriguing thought as we gaze through it to see what lies beyond. The realms and dimensions can get muddied at times. Just loved this 🙏 you did an amazing job and painted such a cool story paired with Kevin’s image 😊

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Laura. I was most interested in your thoughts about this poem. I see spirits in life and in my dreams and don’t feel the division between us. Kevin’s mirror certainly prompted the poem.

      1. Laura

There isn’t a division in most cases – they are just like us, only in another realm or dimension. You have a beautiful gift, Mary. 😊 they definitely do come through in dreams, it is an easy way to access through communication. Kevin’s mirror does resonate so very deeply with that type of connection 🙏

        1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Laura. I appreciate your expertise on this.

Hi Laura, Is this the email you are messaging: marykdoyle@att.net? I still don’t see a message from you.

          1. Laura

I just sent one through. It should be from laurabennettwords@gmail.com 😊

  3. noga noga

In the past, our people used to say, “Don’t look in the mirror too much, especially at night, so that you don’t change your partner from the other world.” Thank you for sharing. I wish you a happy day and good luck, my beautiful sister, Mary.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Oh, so interesting, Nougat. My mom would warn us not to take anything from the dead. Many of us see spirits in life or in our dreams.

Your poem captures the mix of childhood curiosity and fear of the unknown really well. The idea of the girl swapping places with a spirit and then being scared of losing herself is both eerie and deep. It made me think about how we balance what we know with what we don’t.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Willie. It is a different style for me that I was experimenting with. Blessings to you today and every day, my friend.

      1. Willie Torres Jr.

It worked out wonderfully. I’ve learned here on WordPress that sometimes, stepping out of our comfort zone and doing something different can work out and be a good thing, and you showed that it is true.

  6. Dawna

This was quite the read Mary. Very interesting. I need to go back and re-read when I have less distraction and really take it in. Hugs to you my friend.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Hi Dawna, it’s different for me, but I like to try different things. Don’t reread if it spooks you, my friend. Only think happy thoughts.

      1. Dawna

Oh it doesn’t spook me at all. I find it very fascinating. My curiosity has me.

  7. johnlmalone

very imaginative — and well told 🙂

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, John. It would have been better posted near Halloween, but I wanted to use Kevin’s image which needed to be used by yesterday. Something different.

      1. johnlmalone

        I like something different 🙂

  8. gc1963

Very interesting. Almost like time travel, the only difference being it’s not present and past but this life and thereafter.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you for commenting. So good to see you.

  9. Garden Bliss

Sent a bit of chill down my spine Mary, and I’m glad she found her footing – as we all must, thankfully. Have a grounded day.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

LOL. Yes, let’s keep our feet on the ground. Hugs to you.

  10. PradP

I hope its her dream and not reality, Poem covers all her experience in detail using very little words, Little but impactful.Took me totally into another thaughts ,I think during childhood we had this scary feeling at night alone in a room or in front of mirrors.Very different and nice one to read.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you for all your feedback, Prad. I wrote it rather quickly in order to use Kevin’s image which had to be posted by yesterday. Have the most wonderful day.

To live is, really, play all the time, with dead.

  17. Kym Gordon Moore

Oh wow, wickedly delicious Mary! 💀🦹‍♀️👻 Reminds me of Esther, the little girl from the movie Orphan!

    1. Mary K. Doyle

I don’t know that movie. I’ll have to check it out. This is a different topic for me to write about. Fun for a change. Love to you, Ms. Kym.

      1. Kym Gordon Moore

My husband found that movie one night. You should be able to find it for free on TV since it came out in 2009. 📺 But to experiment with your writing in different genres simply diversifies your craft. Enjoy the rest of your day my dear. 🥰🥂😁

  18. Nancy Homlitas

  21. jeanvivace

This one is really different, makes me think. Is this a poem as an art or is this about someone or is this for someone. Anyway there is the thing no one should play with, there are certainly consequences. Very well written and performed poem. I love your audio tracks!! I hope everything is alright and you are happy and healthy! Blessings!!

    1. Mary K. Doyle

      Thank you, Jean.

  22. Pooja G

Really liked the darker tale, glad she learnt her lesson before it was too late.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thanks, Pooja. Scary isn’t usually my thing. Real life freaks me out enough. LOL. I’m glad you like this.

      1. Pooja G

Very imaginative and mystique full of so much uncertainty and captivating, amazing

    1. Mary K. Doyle

It’s not my typical style but I do like to try new things from time to time. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, Mister Maxxx.

      1. mistermaxxx08

That’s what makes you unique and talented, flexing out of your style, I explore directly and also the things said which stay on my mind, have a fantastic weekend peace and uplift soulful thoughts

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Oh Lbeth, I doubt I will write any more scary pieces. I scare myself too much!

  27. hubertprevy

I like it. And the rhythmic is strong, more so as I’m unable do describe it, or analyze.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you so much, Hubert. Have the best day.
