Elmer Flew the Coop

I would never have guessed this to have happened. Elmer picked up his family and left the property without a word. No good-bye. No discussion about damages to the house or how to handle his security deposit. Not one family photo with the little ones.

Nothing.

One day, Irma was in and out of the house feeding the chicks. The next day, everyone was gone. I doubt Iโ€™ll hear from Elmer or Irma again, not even in a Christmas card.

When I first noticed the house was quiet, I thought the family went out for flying lessons or a bite to eat. But evidently, that was not so, because no one has returned.

The Wren family is now the talk of the town.

House Finch said the quick getaway was Irmaโ€™s idea. She may be correct. After all Elmer and I have been through, I donโ€™t believe he wanted things to end this way. We had a solid friendship.

Or so I thought. Maybe I really didnโ€™t know the guy. Perhaps he wasnโ€™t the wren I thought he was.

Goldfinch said Elmer did the same thing last year to another neighbor before moving into my birdhouse.

Hummingbird Clearwing Hemaris thysbe said I should have known better. But then, with a name like Hummingbird Clearwing Hemaris thysbe, that creature thinks he knows everything.

Honestly, I’m disappointed and sad.

I wonder if the little ones will return to where it all began next spring. They may come to start their own families here. And you know me. I donโ€™t hold grudges. I’ll rent to them. After all, theyโ€™re not responsible for their parentsโ€™ actions.

But I guess, I can’t expect any better from the young ones than from their parents. Who would have taught them any differently?

Oh Mary, I’m really sorry to hear that Elmer and his family have moved on. I know how much you enjoyed their company, just as we cherished hearing your stories about them. Hopefully, you’ll find new tenants who appreciate you more than Elmer did. It’s quite audacious of him to leave without a word of thanks, a gift, or even payment for your hospitality, food, and the blessings you provided. I hope this hasn’t saddened you too much. Remember, you played a significant role in helping Elmer feel loved and find a family. Now he’s learned to provide for them himself.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Ah, thanks, Willie. Such is life, I guess. It was a fun little series to write, a good break from today’s craziness.

      1. Willie Torres Jr.

    ๐Ÿ˜” Bah, Hummingbird!

    1. Mary K. Doyle

It’s an insect with a very long name that looks similar to a hummingbird.. Crazy, isn’t it?

      1. Under the mask..

I think that’s what we call a hummingbird moth? One on our bee balm fooled me until I saw the antennae!

        1. Mary K. Doyle

          They do look similarly.

  6. KC

Itโ€™s natural for them to move on. Sad for us though. Donโ€™t be mad at them. More will come. ๐Ÿ˜‰

This brought back memories of the summer of one of our moves. We had one of those apartment-style birdhouses with twelve holes. Each year it was a haven for a bird called purple martins (similar to swallows) who migrate to warmer climates for part of the year. Dad had removed the house as we were about to move the following week. The martens, who had flown from Mexico to North Dakota (approximately 2,000 miles) made their annual return and kept flying through the air searching for the missing house. It made quite an impression on me in the pre-GPS era.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Hi Peter. Thank you for sharing that story. The birds sure are amazing navigators. How incredible of them to fly such distances and return to the exact location from the previous year. I’d love to see purple martins. Wonderful story.

Great post!! I have two crows who visit my patio daily and fly beside me when I walk in the neighborhood. They adopted me a few years ago and have now added a child into the mix. I never thought I would be a crow mama, but I am enjoying their visits.
