The Return of Elmer

Elmer has returned with his call to the ladies. You may remember last spring’s posts on Elmer (“Elmer the Songster Wren,” “Update on Elmer,” and “Elmer, Sylvia, and the Mess They Made”).

Elmer had a modern, new house that was sure to help him attract a mate. The stunning abode even had window boxes.

By the end of winter, the building was left in shambles and needed to be replaced. The new one isn’t as fancy. In fact, it’s relatively plain, and Elmer’s on his way to destroying this one too.

The nest that he diligently built reaches the top of the house and is bursting out of the back panel. There is little room inside for entertainment and hosting guests.

Last year, Elmer’s call was incessant from dawn to dusk. I work on the patio whenever possible, and his twittering got a bit much. But the guy was working the field, and who could blame him for that? After all, his job is to find a lady and produce little Elmers.

For some reason, he’s not as persistent this year. Perhaps he is feeling rejected or getting too old for the mating game. I must admit, I’m accustomed to the guy, and I like him, but I don’t think he has a lot of charisma.

We also have the condition of his new home that may be holding him back. One peak inside and a possible mate would know she has a lot of housekeeping to do.

Yet, I doubt Elmer will give up. He’s still out working the field. You have to give him credit for such persistence.

If you have any female wrens seeking a gentleman near you, please tell them about Elmer. You never know when a love match is possible.

  4. Looking for the Light

Love is always possible! I love my birds, bought some new houses this year and still trying to attract Purple martins to their house. It’s new, about 5-6 years old and my hubby won’t do the heavy lifting required to attract them. He bought the feeder I always wanted for what? To look at?

    1. Mary K. Doyle

If you spot a purple martin, I’d love to see it. That would be exciting, Melinda.

Aww. This was a wonderful continuation to the first. Elmer sounds so beautiful singing . I can see how it can get frustrating hearing it over and over but it’s also a reminder that even when one feels alone, there is always something to sing Praises over , and that is that we are alive and loved by God.

Thank you for sharing such a Wonderful Story.

Good Luck Elmer, keep singing and bringing joy to all who hear your praises.
