Poem–Dreams to Reality

Dreams to Reality
by Mary K. Doyle

Imagine your dreams
exactly as you want them
and they will come true.

*

well, maybe.

*

In my mind,

I saunter around the pool in a glamorous sun hat, designer sunglasses, and heels. I remove my hat and glasses and set them on the edge of a lounge chair. I kick off my heels and glide up the ladder to the diving board.

All eyes are on me as I take a little bounce and fly into the air like an angel. I elegantly dive into the water.

The applause is thunderous.

In reality,

I trip around the pool in a baseball cap, dollar store sunglasses, and Old Navy flip flops. I remove my cap and glasses and set them on the side of the pool in a puddle of water.

I kick off my flip-flops. One hits a child in the face. She cries and runs to her mother. Two-year-olds are so whiny.

I pull myself up the ladder to the diving board. I bounce twice, the second time slipping off the board as it hits me in the back of my legs. My belly flop results in a massive splash. I cough and doggie paddle to the edge of the pool, then ask for help getting up on the deck.

The laughter is embarrassing.

*

This post was simply to put a smile on your face. I hope it did that.

  16. Awakening Wonders

Well dear Mary, this post is a start to an award winning contemporary fictional novel!

    1. Mary K. Doyle

LOL. I get moments of funny, but honestly, Mary, I don’t think I could write a whole book of humor.

      1. Awakening Wonders

        You may just surprise yourself!

  17. hubertprevy

Tell me about it. Some year ago, I started panic-choking on a yacht as my long-coveted yacht trip had barely started…

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Oh, no, Hubert. That wasn’t what you’d envisioned, I’m sure.

      1. hubertprevy

It definitely wasn’t planned, Mary. I had been looking forward to it so much, as it was to be my first-ever experience on a yacht.

But the disappointment was more than compensated for a few weeks earlier, when my youngest had his own milestone: his very first scuba dive. He’s only seven—the minimum age is usually eight—but he had trained diligently all through the past year. Watching him take that step filled me with pride.
You see, Mary—every mishap only serves to amplify the joy of the experiences that follow.

        1. Mary K. Doyle

          So true!

  18. Dawna

At first, I was invisioning the flying through the air like and angel, then I had to laugh because that is so me, belly flop and all.

    Hugs to you,

    PS

    I am smiling

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Good to know I put a smile on your sweet face, Dawna. Love you.

  19. Rosaliene Bacchus

An unforgettable, embarrassing experience of life when things don’t go according to our imagination. As a spectator, I couldn’t stop myself from laughing 😀

    1. Mary K. Doyle

I’m so happy you laughed, Rosaliene. We sure need that right now.

      1. Rosaliene Bacchus

We sure do, Mary. I hate it when my favorite comedians go on vacation this time of year 😦

        1. Mary K. Doyle

Or get fired for talking against the big idiot.

          1. Rosaliene Bacchus

            I know!

  49. Eternity

I remember a vacation, many years ago, where my family and I went to Galveston, Texas. As I climbed up the ladder, all the way up, and as I stood atop a very high diving board, the only thing that I can remember that I had on, “was a tremendously painful sunburn!” No Old Navy, or Old Air Force, ” etc.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

Hahaha. What I wrote was fiction, but it could be me! Most of us aren’t as glamorous as we’d hope.

      1. Eternity

If it’s in our mind, it must be true. LOL

  50. Savvy Raj
