Poem–To Be a Wildflower

To Be a Wildflower

My garden’s pampered,
nurtured daily, talked to,
fed, watered, and pruned.
I attend to these plants
in great hope of blooms.

And then there are the
bountiful wildflowers
rooted where they land
thriving on whatever
sun and rain may fall.

Vibrant and diverse.
Swaying to the music
of frogs, crickets, birds.
Dancing free in the wind.
Uninhibited.

Swamp rose mallow  Hibiscus moscheutos

Crown vetch

Milkweed

Purple loosestrife

Black Eyed Susan

Beautiful poem! I love the contrast between the pampered garden and the free-spirited wildflowers. This is a message about embracing freedom and spontaneity is really inspiring. The wildflowers seem to embody a carefree and joyful spirit, untethered by expectations or constraints. It’s a lovely reminder to let go and thrive in our own unique ways.

Beautiful poem, Mary. I really liked the photos, and I was reading the background on Black-eyed Susans, it was very interesting. Apparently, the name comes from the ballad “Black-eyed Susan” by John Gay, where Susan goes aboard a ship in dock to ask the sailors where her lover, Sweet William, has gone.
