France is Calling

She whispers, shouts, nudges. France is calling, and I can’t ignore her much longer.

The art, especially in the Louvre, the cuisine, music, and the iconic Eifel Tower are among the attractions on my list. I want to sip tea or wine in a café, break crusty bread and dine on French delicacies, stroll the gardens of the Palace of Versailles, and coast down the Seine River in a boat. I want to visit sweet, French villages with flower boxes, meet her beautiful people, and listen to their stories of living in their lovely country.

Perhaps this urge to see France began with the story of Mary, the mother of Jesus and her apparition in Lourdes, France. I’ve traveled to Fatima, Portugal; Knock, Ireland; and Mexico City, Mexico to shrines to Our Lady, but have yet to see Lourdes, perhaps the most famous Marian shrine of all.

And then, after attending St. Mary-of-the-Woods College, a school founded by Saint Theodora/Mother Theodore Guerin and where I received a Master’s degree in Pastoral Theology, I wrote two books about this saint (Seven Principles of Sainthood and Saint Theodora and Her Promise to God.) I also attended this saint’s canonization in Rome.

Mother Theodore was a missionary from France who came to the United States in 1840 to found schools in Illinois and Indiana and the women’s college, St. Mary-of-the-Woods. She was born in Estables-sur-Mer in Brittany, entered the Sisters of Providence of Ruille-sur-Lor, and taught in central France in the city of Preuilly-sur-Claise. I would love to see where this favorite saint lived and worked.

My mother researched our family genealogy, and nothing of France was ever mentioned. But when I submitted a 23 and Me test, low and behold, results stated that I was French (as well as Irish, Italian, and German.) According to my DNA, my bloodlines run to Grand Est, Ile-de-France, and Pays de la Loire. I’m not certain of where those areas are located, but I’m eager to find out.

And of course, we heard much about France during the Olympics.

I recently purchased a pair of little pink Eifel Tower earrings at the French Market in my town, so now, I’m committed. I have to make a trip to France a reality. I will keep you posted on that.

**Thank you, Kevin, from The Beginning at Last, for the use of your creative image of the Eifel Tower.

Such a good observation. I bet you are right about that.

  2. Looking for the Light

Paris is a great time, I went with my girlfriend. We stayed in Paris but took a couple of train rides, one to see Versailles and to my favorite winery that makes Champaign. I would love to go back and spend about three weeks to see all the other great regions. We did the whole round of museums and I was overwhelmed at the masterpieces available to see in person. The Impressionist Period is my favorite so I got my feel and could feel the vibe of the great masters. There are some great writers but I didn’t have time to walk the bookstores and visit the places made famus by so many writers. Even Hemingway spent time their in the 30’s and wrote several books on observations of the cultire at the time. I didn’t know that until recently when I puchsed several Hemingway books for my husband. It has a soul of it’s own.

Thank you for all that info, Melinda. Now, I want to go for sure.

The people weren’t as snobby either but we stayed in the 12th addronisment which is a younger more layed back area. You get over by the desinger boutiques and nicest houses and the attitude it a bit different. My girlfriend and I went tot he Louis Vuttion store to buy a few items, there is no looking around, you stand single file until your called to the counter and tell them what you want. When you get tothe airport you get to claim your Vat tax back since your tking out of the country. It saved us hundreds of dollars. Just be sure to get to the airort in plenty of time because the line can be long. If it’s made in Frnce you can get your VAT tax back and on high end items it’s worth the wait. I still have the items punched in 1994 and they are precious to me. I don’t use them much anymore since I’m past the logo area but do use when I travel because that’s what I bought them for. Start planning you trip. If you know French it’s a huge bonus, I only knew a few words and with a Texas twang is did not sound very pretty. Most know English it’s a matter if they care to use is.

        1. Mary K. Doyle

Thank you, Melinda. I don’t typically purchase high-end items. If I do, I will follow your guidelines. At this point, I don’t have any plans. I will think about this over the next couple of months. Hugs to you.

Years ago I submitted a My Heritage sample and received a general idea back, nothing as detailed as 23 and Me sounds, though.

    1. Mary K. Doyle

I submitted to 23 and Me for the medical information, but have been fascinated with the genealogy. I wish I had more time to read through all the posts they have.

They were very different experiences, Mary, and in one we were staying with friends. Mont S. Michel was incredible but I loved Castelnaudary on the Canal du Midi.
